Day 1 - Arrive Milan

Welcome to beautiful northern Italy, and the world capital of fashion and design, Milan! From age-old ruins standing proudly next to futuristic skyscrapers, to quaint cobblestone lanes merging with bustling city avenues, Italy has surprises at every corner. Lose yourself in the aromas of freshly baked pizza, rich pasta sauces, deliciously smooth artisanal gelati and the delicate taste of locally pressed olive oil — all perfectly paired with world-class wines. Whether you’re a serious foodie or a style enthusiast itching to explore the latest trends in clothing, shoes, and handbags, Italy truly offers a slice of paradise for everyone! Milan’s vibrant streets hum with creative energy, where high-end fashion, art and design effortlessly mingle. Day or night, lively aperitivo bars beckon you to grab a spritz and socialise with stylish locals. It’s a cosmopolitan playground bursting with culture, elegance and joyous surprises around every corner. We don’t want you to miss out on any aspect of your small group tour. To ensure that you don’t, we recommend you arrive at your hotel by 4.00pm. This evening, say ‘ciao’ to your fellow travellers and Tour Director over a welcome drink at the hotel.

Day 2 - Milan – Lake Maggiore

Our day starts with exploring the capital of the Lombardy region, Milan. Often described as the city of the future, this buzzing metropolis is where big business and haute couture meet, creating a city like no other. On our tour this morning we’ll walk by the impressive Sforzesco Castle, a grand fortress that once housed Milan’s ruling families and take in the views of the magnificent Duomo, the most impressive structure in Milan, its intricate gothic architecture and towering spires are nothing short of breathtaking. The elegant Vittorio Emanuele Gallery then invites us to stroll through its stunning shopping arcade that dates back to the 19th century. The glass dome and lavish surroundings will transport you to a time of luxury, and you might just be tempted by Milan’s finest boutiques lining the arcade. Our tour continues to the magnificent Teatro alla Scala, where we journey through the history of opera at one of the world’s most renowned theatres. Along the way, we’ll admire the auditorium and rare memorabilia associated with legendary composers and performers, while uncovering the rich artistic heritage of Milan’s iconic La Scala. Ready for a scenic getaway? Wave goodbye to city life this afternoon as we journey to Lake Maggiore, nestled in the magnificent Lake District. Once we’ve checked-in and had some time to put our feet up, we’ll head to an unforgettable group welcome dinner this evening. Today involves approximately 3 hours of walking.

Day 3 - Lake Maggiore

Welcome to Lake Maggiore, Italy’s second-largest lake, perched along the southern edge of the Alps and overflowing with hidden wonders. Despite its breathtaking size, this sparkling lake is a little less crowded than some of Italy’s other lakes, meaning you can soak in every marvellous moment uninterrupted. This morning, we’ll take a boat out to visit one of the Borromean Islands. Pack your sunglasses for the boat ride, because the sunshine reflects perfectly off the brilliant blue water, illuminating your path past tiny, flower-filled pockets of paradise. The Borromean Islands are a true highlight, boasting spectacular 16th and 17th century architecture, plus gardens so pristine you’d swear they’re straight out of a fairy tale! You’ll love strolling through Isola Bella, the “beautiful island,” with its elegant palazzo, dreamy Italianate Garden and charming fishing village offering glorious views from every angle. Spanning around 65 kilometres, Lake Maggiore even extends across the Swiss border, giving you a chance to say you visited two countries in one day! The rest of the afternoon is yours to lounge away at your leisure. Whether you’re a history buff, a garden lover or just seeking that blissful lakeside escape, Lake Maggiore has you covered.

Day 4 - Lake Como Excursion

Today we discover some of the charming towns nestled along spectacular Lake Como. Our journey begins with a bus ride to the lakeside town of Menaggio. Renowned for its historic city centre, and characterised by cobblestone streets and inviting cafés, Menaggio also boasts a delightful lakeside promenade. Here, locals and visitors alike can unwind amidst the stunning scenery and enjoy leisurely strolls. We take to the water in Menaggio on a public boat and make our way to our next destination, Varenna. Arriving in the small and incredibly charming village of Varenna, we’ll embark on a guided tour uncovering the best sights in the area. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Varenna is home to a gorgeous lakefront esplanade lined with colourful buildings, cute cafés and quaint boutiques. After our tour, indulge in a little downtime — perhaps you want to check out the nearby pebble beach, Riva di Gittana, or sample some of the local cuisine. Our final stop is mesmerising Bellagio, hailed as the “Pearl of Lake Como.” Take in the incredible scenery along the way, including lovely hillside villas with the Alps as a backdrop, plus a guided introduction to this famous village’s storied past. With free time after, you could wander the narrow lanes, admire exotic blooms in the Villa Melzi gardens and snap Instagram-worthy photos at every turn. Perhaps grab a bite at a local trattoria, sipping regional wine while the world drifts by. As late afternoon arrives, we’ll bid farewell to Lake Como’s timeless charm and head back to Lake Maggiore.

Day 5 - Lake Maggiore – Parma - Bologna

Get ready for a mouthwatering journey as we head towards Parma, a city oozing with style, culture and irresistible flavours. Famed for its remarkable architecture, vibrant music scene and time-honoured artistic heritage, Parma is also the proud birthplace of Parmesan cheese and prosciutto. Naturally, we’ll pause to savour these scrumptious local treats — because who could resist freshly shaved Parmesan or delicate slices of prosciutto? Indulging in Parma’s culinary delights is the perfect way to fuel up for our next stop, Modena. Here, we’ll visit a renowned balsamic vinegar producer and discover the meticulous process of creating this liquid gold and enjoy tasting its rich, complex flavours. Once our taste buds are thoroughly satisfied, we continue to the gorgeous city of Bologna, often referred to as “La Rossa” for its red-brick palazzi, soaring towers and endless porticos. Fun fact: Bologna boasts Europe’s second-largest historic centre and its winding streets and ancient buildings echo with centuries of stories. Settled since around 1000 BC, Bologna also lays claim to the oldest university in the world, the University of Bologna, founded in 1088. With such a rich past, it’s no wonder culture and knowledge practically pulse through the streets. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Perhaps wander the medieval alleys or relax with a strong espresso, letting Italy’s timeless charm wash over you. Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

Day 6 - Bologna

Buon appetite food explorers! Today we embark on a mouthwatering adventure through Bologna, Italy’s food capital and carb-lover’s paradise. Our first stop is the vibrant Mercato delle Erbe, where colourful stalls overflow with juicy produce, heavenly cheeses and irresistible cured meats. We’ll wander through the Quadrilatero, the oldest market in Italy, and treat our tastebuds to iconic bites like pillowy tortellini, mortadella and rich balsamic vinegar — yes, the real deal! Then it's time to reward ourselves with slices of delicious pizza, scoops of creamy gelato, and a shot (or two) of gourmet coffee. Finally, with happy hearts and full bellies, we head back to our hotel for some well-earned leisure time. Today involves approximately 3 hours of walking.

Day 7 - Bologna – Venice

After enjoying some leisure time this morning, we head north to the one and only Venice. Known as the city of romance, it has the capacity to impress not only first timers, but also the most jaded of travellers. It is unlike anywhere else on the planet, with a mosaic of 117 islands connected by 409 bridges, where cars are banned and everyone, including postmen and the police, travel by gondolas. By the time we arrive at our hotel, you’ll already be in love — with Venice and maybe with Italy itself. Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Day 8 - Venice

Venice, the city of romance, is like nowhere else on Earth. Built on 118 islands and connected by canals instead of roads, it’s a city where cars are banned — and even the postmen and police get around by boat. It’s a truly unique place, and we’ll explore it together on a walking sightseeing tour. We’ll start at the stunning Doge’s Palace, the heart of Venice’s former power. This beautiful building combines gothic and Renaissance styles, and inside, you’ll find rooms brimming with history and art. We’ll also pass by the famous Bridge of Sighs, where prisoners once took one last look at the outside world on their way to the nearby Piombi Prison. The history here is palpable! After the tour, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. You could take a peaceful gondola ride along the canals, stroll across the Rialto Bridge, explore the lively markets or relax with a coffee in one of Venice’s charming squares. St. Mark’s Basilica may also be on your list to view the shimmering mosaics on display. Given the popularity and nature of this place, it is advised that you book tickets well in advance (prior to departing Australia) if you wish to visit the famous St Mark’s Basilica and its incredible museum. Today involves approximately 2 hours of walking.

Optional Excursion

Murano Glassblowing Workshop – Travel by boat to the island of Murano, to witness the centuries-old Venetian art form of glassblowing. The traditional practices still remain to this day where skilled artisans shape molten glass into delicate, colourful works such as vases, chandeliers, beads, and sculptures. Known for its precision, creativity and distinctive techniques, Murano glass is celebrated worldwide for its beauty and craftsmanship. 2.5hrs – from Euro 30pp, this figure does not include the 5 € entrance fee in Murano for the glass making demonstration, which needs to be paid locally on arrival.

Day 9 - Venice – Dolomites

Get ready for some jaw-dropping scenery as we cruise through the gorgeous Boite River Valley. Think rolling green hills, thick forests and the dramatic peaks of Mount Pelmo and Mount Antelao towering above it all like nature’s own skyscrapers. This region isn’t just pretty; it’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed for its natural beauty. The Ampezzo Valley is a true showstopper, but it comes with a side of turbulent history. During World War I, these peaceful-looking slopes saw intense battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces. It’s hard to imagine such a stunning place once echoed with the sounds of war. As we wind our way toward the Dolomites, Italy’s crown jewels of the northern Alps, keep your camera ready because the views just keep getting better. With their jagged peaks and ever-changing light, the Dolomites are some of the most awe-inspiring mountains on Earth. Once we’ve arrived and checked into our hotel, the rest of the day is yours. Take a stroll, breathe in that crisp mountain air, or simply kick back and soak up the gorgeous Alpine views. Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours

Day 10 - Dolomites

Today we explore the breathtaking Dolomites. The Dolomite mountains developed into what they are today thanks to geological activity from over 230 million years ago. The foothills of this famous region are beautifully striking with green pastures, the occasional shepherd’s house, and forests stretching into the distance, like a scene from Heidi. The houses in this region resemble adorable Swiss-style chalets, low with gentle sloping roofs and window boxes adorned with colourful flowers. Breathe in the crisp mountain air, snap a few postcard-worthy photos and take it all in — this is alpine magic at its finest.

Special Experience

Take a chairlift up the mountains to the open-air museum of the 5 Torri, which bears the scars of WWI battles fought between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians.

After our scenic adventure, the rest of the day is yours to spend however you like. Whether you choose to relax with a cappuccino, explore charming local villages, or simply kick back and enjoy the view, you’re in one of the most beautiful spots in Europe.

Today involves approximately 2 hours of walking often across uneven ground and in areas of high altitude.

Day 11 - Dolomites – Lake Bled

Today’s adventure takes us across the border and straight into a fairytale — welcome to Bled, a dreamy gem tucked into the heart of the Slovenian Alps. Picture snow-capped peaks, lush forests that seem to whisper ancient secrets, tumbling waterfalls and crystal-clear streams just begging you to dip your toes in. Truly magical! We’ll arrive at this alpine wonderland in the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to stretch your legs and soak in the spellbinding beauty at your own pace. Whilst exploring the Lake Bled area, stop and try a local Slovenian dish, known as the Bled cream cake. This isn’t just any dessert, it’s a local superstar. Made with layers of puff pastry, custard and whipped cream, it’ll be hard not to go back for seconds. Other cafés offer chocolate fruit versions of the cream cake too. Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Day 12 - Lake Bled

We’ve planned an unforgettable day of exploring the magical wonderland of Bled for you! We’ll kick things off this morning by strolling along the tranquil lakeshore, soaking in the postcard-perfect views, and then continuing to the famed Bled Castle. Perched boldly above the sparkling waters, this majestic fortress has roots all the way back to 1004 AD, when it was gifted to the Bishops of Brixen. They wasted no time building a defensive stronghold by 1011 AD, and nowadays, it’s a fascinating museum with exhibits that bring its rich past to life. From there, we’ll whisk you away to the enchanting valley of Bohinj. Prepare to be awe-struck by its pristine lake, surrounded by lush forests and towering mountain peaks. As we wind our way through quaint Slovenian villages, you’ll have loads of opportunities to admire charming homes and marvel at nature’s masterpiece around every turn.

Special Experience

Visit a local cheese producer, learning about the life of herdsmen in an authentic environment and tasting the delicious cheeses.

Next up, a thrilling ride on the Mt Vogel cable car awaits, which will take us high above the clouds for picture-perfect panoramic views. Finally, we’ll return to Bled, hopefully with our hearts full of adventure and our memories bursting with Slovenian enchantment!

Day 13 - Lake Bled – Postojna – Ljubljana

Prepare for an epic subterranean journey at Postojna Cave, Europe’s second longest and most popular show cave. This hidden underworld stretches across an impressive 20 kilometres of passages, galleries and chambers, all packed with two-million-year-old stalagmites and stalactites. As we wander through these ancient corridors, keep an eye out for the mysterious olm, also known as the “human-fish”, which thrives in this one-of-a-kind ecosystem. Our journey then continues to Predjama for a photo opportunity of the impressive Predjama Castle, dramatically built into the mouth of a cavern. Our afternoon leads us to lovely Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, known for its abundance of lush green spaces. This beautiful city features a charming hilltop castle, an emerald-green river winding through the heart of town and lively outdoor cafés bustling with friendly chatter. Here, we’ll stroll through the colourful central open-air market, swing by the grand Baroque Town Hall and admire Robba’s Fountain. Finally, we’ll arrive at the renowned Three Bridges — an architectural gem that perfectly reflects Ljubljana’s captivating mix of old and new — before having the rest of the day to freely explore the city. Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Day 14 - Ljubljana – Slunj - Plitvice Lakes National Park

Get ready for an unforgettable day as we journey into mesmerising Croatia. Along the way we stop to visit the beautiful watermill village in Rastoke. Here the bright, turquoise water of the Slunjčica flows into the Korana River, which over time has created a series of picturesque waterfalls. Next, we continue our drive towards Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s national treasure that was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. The stunning Plitvice Lakes is all set to spark your sense of wonder, with its crystal-clear waters that have carved travertine barriers over thousands of years, giving rise to a network of waterfalls, lakes and caves. The water’s ever-changing hues — from azure to vivid green or misty grey — will leave you speechless, as each view is more spectacular than the last.

Special Experience

Spend two nights in stunning Plitvice Lakes National Park, only 400 metres from the highest waterfall.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Day 15 - Plitvice Lakes National Park

World Heritage-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park comprises 16 terraced lakes surrounded by densely wooded hills. This stunning national park lies in the Lika region of Croatia and covers a total area of 300 square kilometres, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of 8 kilometres. Get your walking shoes on, because this morning, we’ll set off for a guided tour around some of the park’s lower lakes. Keep your eyes peeled for vibrant flora and fauna, and don’t forget to take plenty of photos along the way — you’ll need photographic evidence to prove this beautiful corner of the world is real! As you navigate the winding wooden boardwalks, marvel at the playful streams and shimmering pools that connect each magnificent lake. Enjoy this afternoon at leisure and enjoy the pure tranquillity. Continue exploring with a leisurely wander and relish every moment spent uncovering the secrets of Plitvice’s lush landscapes. Today involves approximately 3 hours of walking across uneven ground.

Information

At Bunnik Tours, we pride ourselves on our ability to create unique, once in a lifetime small group tours that are filled with incredible experiences you might not be able to have on your own, or in a larger group. However, that does mean aspects of our itineraries can be challenging for some travellers.

We want to make sure all Bunnik Tours travellers enjoy their trip, not struggle through it, so let’s work together to ensure our tours are right for you!

Fitness to Travel Requirements

Within seven days of your booking you will need to complete a Passenger Registration form, which also includes a Fitness to Travel declaration.

By competing the Passenger Fitness to Travel Declaration you confirm you:

  • Can walk for 4–5 hours per day at a group pace, often in direct sunlight and on uneven surfaces, without using a walking aid;
  • Can walk up multiple flights of stairs and short, steep hills without assistance;
  • Can stand for extended periods, including in hot and/or humid conditions, without needing to sit down;
  • Can carry your own luggage (including to/from hotels where porterage is not available);
  • Are comfortable using a combined shower/bath (note: stand-alone showers cannot be guaranteed at all properties);
  • Can get on and off various forms of transport, including small boats, multiple times each day without assistance;
  • Understand that dietary requirements may not always be fully accommodated;
  • Do not have any mobility or medical condition (whether diagnosed or undiagnosed) including cognitive, mobility, vision, or hearing impairments, that may affect your ability to safely participate in tour activities or independently manage your well-being during free time on tour without special assistance from our (or our suppliers’) personnel.

If you have a health condition, such as cognitive impairment, vision/hearing impairment, or other medical conditions (diagnosed or undiagnosed) that may affect your ability to fully participate in tour activities or manage your own well-being during free time on tour, you will need to provide us with more details.

If you do not feel that you can confidently manage all of the requirements set out above, please work with our team of Travel Specialists to find an alternative that is better suited to your current level of fitness.

Please visit our Fitness to Travel page for full details on our fitness policy.

FITNESS TO TRAVEL

 In the itinerary, this symbol indicates a particularly challenging day, where there will be extended periods of walking time, often across uneven ground and in areas of high altitude or heat and humidity.
